hi

i tried a 11 speed wheel+cassetee in my 130mm spaced steel frame.

because the frame is an old steel, it is unable to take an 11 speed set up, because the smallest cog hits the chain stay, just in front of the drop out.

Am i likely to have the same issue with a modern 10 speed? I have run 8 speed without issue, i suspect 9 will be fine, but i wonder if a 10 will fit.

anyone been down this road?

It's very dependant on the exact frame and sprocket size.
I can run 11 and 12 top sprockets on my steel frame, but 13 catches.

There should (somewhere) be a set of dimensions showing the dropout/top sprocket offset for various cassettes. You'll Be able to make a call based on what you already know works/doesn't work.

New question...

Lock ring to drop out clearance?

Sheldon states the smaller the better.

Below is a 9sp cassette and a 10sp cassette

The 9 is fine

The 10 is quite tight, less than 1mm from the dropout. The wheel goes in ok, but not as smoothly as the 9. This is because the lowest cog touches the frame as I push it up to the dropouts.

I think the chain should clear the seatstay without too much risk

Thoughts?
