I want to fit some fatter tyres for L'Erocia Britannia as a good part of the route is off road.

How many mm clearance is required between the chainstays and the tyre to allow for flex in the frame? It is a Columbus SLX frame.

As long as you can see daylight ;)

Actually, flex isn't so much of a problem, it's more a combination of the fact that the wheel shifts slightly over time and hammering over rough roads (so keep an eye on it if it's close) and if it's really really close you'll find that wet sludge off the road gets caught there and eventually it can scuff the frame.

2-3mm is bucketloads and will be fine.

Flex in the frame isn't a real problem with close clearence, the real problem is if you hit something and put the wheel out of true..........then it smacks the chainstays whatever you do. The wheel moving along the dropout is easy as you get off and re-centre it.

The TT frames of my era (70's) had quite deep dents in the chainstays to make sure if you buckled a wheel a bit then you could keep going......
