Can't identify Carlton for the life of me

Retro Newbie
Hi all. I've got a Red framed Carlton with a white sleeve on the seatpost tube and green stripes on the down tube under the "Carlton" name. The frame has "A4264" stamped on the rear dropout and the serial is 3488831 on the bottom bracket.

According to the Raleigh serials I looked at, the serial suggests about 1965-67, but "A4264" according to the Dating Carltons website makes it 1939 which seems far too old!

The brakes are Weinmann Dynamics and it was, I think, originally a five speed with Sachs huret kit on.

It also had Bluemels mudguards fitted and the rear framework wraps up and around the seat post.

Any idea? The closest I can find is the Dynamic Clubman but that doesn't mention Sachs Huret gears etc, but "simplex".

Either way, the detailing is beautiful on it and I'd like to know what I'm dealing with.

By the way, I should point out that it has new non-original handlebars and a crankset and a new rear wheel and cassette as I've been "restoring" it - or at least making it roadworthy!

I'm sure Sachs and Huret didn't merge until something like 1984, so anything with that name stamped on it will be a later addition.

On iPhone so typing hopeless. But those lugs are Crespera design which narrows it down. Shaun

Clearly from the Raleigh era, with the cheap hollow swaged wrapover.
I can't see in the pic, but has it got the octagonal Raleigh headset?

Well that's even more confusing. The badge on the front denoted Worksop, which shut in 1981, but Sachs Huret merged in 1984. Perhaps that's a retro fitted item then?

The bottom bracket is also 26 tpi. Not sure about the Octagon bit - will look later.

Also Crespera lugs apparently were introduced in 1967 and used until 1974...

26 tpi means its a Raleigh, one of perhaps 700,000 made in worksop.
Also sold as Sun and BSA, but more for export because Carlton did not sell in the US.

Its a mixutre of new and old.

As Shaun says the Crespera lugs date it from about 1967, looks like a Race Proved buckle graphic on the fork crown so nearer 1970...
