What did the G.S. stand for??

I assume it means cycling team or squad ... but my reverse engineering via Google translate isn't working out ...
 
It usually means Gruppo Sportivo - if I get the spelling right - classical Italian term for a group who take part in cycling events. A common prefix to cycling club names in the classic era, even in the UK...

Yep. Groupe Sportive/Sportif etc., depending on which language you're using.

A bit like SC in soccer I suppose.

Which doesn't necessarily mean 'Soccer Club'. ;)
