First of all, thanks again 47p2!

I used some pliers and hammer to get the ring of from the end of the axle in the lower pic. Dunno what it was but I'll have to check the bearing rings when I get home. Then I used some pushing and hammering to get the axle out and voilá it came off:

Not a qenuine Mavic axle. I don't understand why someone put it there in the first place but now it's off.

Glad you managed to remove it. Original axles have been known to break and replacement axles hard to find. This looks like something someone had turned on a lathe at home, I still don't understand how it was held in place when built as the threads are required for adjustment and holding the axle in place
