I drive a Land Rover Defender and need to get a bike carrier that mounts on the spare wheel. There are loads on the market so if you have one I'd welcome feedback on how you've found using it.

I'm also interested in views on whether the 'hanging by the crossbar' (which seems to be most of them) or 'standing on its wheels' (eg Avenir) type is better. As well as a conventionally framed road bike I need to carry my full susser and the Mrs' hardtail so the latter feels a better option.

To answer the obvious questions: there isn't room to carry one bike inside let alone two and the roof is over two metres up so roof carriers are impractical.
