Back in the saddle

Retro Newbie
Hi all!

I'm Darren Berrecloth and had a shop in Woodford Green, Essex called 'Berrecloth Cycles' (aka Berrecloth Triathlon) back in the 80s / 90s which I closed in 93/94. I specialised in triathlon and was sole UK retailer for Orbit Softride and Dave Lloyd Softride frames (although I believe Dave did make these frames for other retailers after I closed). The vast majority of bikes were made to order and with Campag group sets which I loved working with.

I haven't been on a bike for nearly 20 years but recently found one of my own machines on ebay, an Orbit 653 softride with Campag group set throughout with the exception of the bottom bracket which the original customer had specified to be replaced with a Royce Titanium sealed bracket.

I picked it up last week and was really pleased to see how well it has been looked after. The wheels were true but needed re-tentioning and I spent a very happy half hour sorting them in my back garden (got chucked out of the living room!).

I have new cables and tubs which which I will be sorting in the next couple of days and it will then only be a case of plucking up the nerve to get back on the road again!

When running my shop, my involvement within triathlon included giving talks and demonstrations on bike design and mechanics to, amongst others, the British Triathlon Association so had a very in depth knowledge of cycle technologies at the time. My family get bored rigid with me when I start talking about bikes so if anyone feels I may be answer any questions for them I would love to help!

Welcome, 20 years and everything has changed, especially the number of cyclists that are on the road today and the amount of traffic. Find a nice quiet back road to start with and work up from there.

Thanks for the welcome..

Ive attached a pic of the bike taken from the ebay ad I bought it from but will add one of my own when I've replaced the cables etc..

I put a bid on that but the reserve was not reached, it was then re-listed but I was away working at the time and missed out.

Hi welcome to RB,

I am sure your knowledge will be an asset to the forum, love the bike and pics are always welcome to lazy readers (like me!).

Welcome aboard, I think you've definitely arrived in the right place. No one here will get bored of bike talk :)

47p2 made a good point about how things have changed on the road over the past 20 years. I hadn't thought about it before, but somebody mentioned the other day that the nice, peaceful Sunday club rides were ruined when the Sunday trading laws were changed. Obvious really

Welcome,

I'm a relative newbie road rider, and really just popped in to say I used to live in Woodford Green, but moved West long before your shop opened.

I saw the Orbit listed and thought it looked very cool, amazing that it has ended up back with you after all these years.

Re: Berrecloth Softride

Hi just bought a Berrecloth its in bad shape but could you please tell me how to age the frame

Re:

If you can give me some info and ideally a photo I should be able to give you an idea of when it was made.
