Tubular glue remover advise

Hi can anybody advise me on the best cleaner to clean off old glue from tubular wheels?

any advise would be great

Neil, There is a topic that has been made a sticky (oh the irony) on all things tubular. If it is fairly recent glue, it just takes ages. If it is older, it takes less time. The only thing I haven't tried is the specialist adhesive remover from the likes of 3M.

its really old glue (probably 50 years old!) so that maybe good news

Try, (in ascending order of desperation), GT85, petrol/lighter fluid and acetone from the chemist. Those metal scourers looking like very soft swarf are ideal.

Wash very well with soapy water afterwards.

Really old and hard glue (especially the red tub glue for track tubs) might be resistant to solvent and require chipping / sandpapering off !

10mm ø wooden dowel with 60 grit glued along it and elbow grease.

FIRE

Using a gas torch (like the plumbers use) you can melt it and scrape it off with a bit of 15 mm copper tube and then sand it smooth. Best done outdoors as it stinks and you need to hold the wheel steady. Don't get the rim too hot as you'll melt the stickers on it.
The glue will bubble up and go soft, then you can scrape it off before it sets again.


WARNING!

If you're going to go down the chemical route, wear gloves. My brother in law used to clean car parts with solvent and melted his thumb nail. 20 years on it's still soft and gooey. Ugh!

:evil: Methyl Ethyl Ketone - Melts anything including your brain cells and body parts. Highly dodgy :evil:

+1 on this I have had great luck with non abrasive dowels or some type of hard nylon. Flake as much old glue off as posible then finish the job with lacquer thinner or petrol.

I've used petrol to remove glue, messy but you can get the rim like new without any scratching.
