Looking to get myself something from the late 80's with 531 and 105. It will probably need a few parts replacing and I'd like to fit the OEM 1050 parts. Question is looking through here and ebay there seems to be a real lack of 1050 parts. Is this just the time of year or is it one of those groups like Mountain LX in the MTB world that there just isn't much about? I was never really into road as MTB's hit the market when I was looking to get my first serious bike so my knowledge is that 105 was the first serious group (kind of like the Deore DX of it's type, with 600 Ultegra like XT and Dura-Ace XTR level). Road won't be my main ride but I'd like something reasonable hence why I've pitched myself at 531 and 105.

Shimano 105, like LX, was very common and spec'd on hundreds of mid range bikes. Your trouble finding parts might be due to said mid range bikes not demanding much on the resale market a handful of years ago and so they went to the scrap heap. Just a guess. However, I searched eBay UK and found dozens of suitable parts including pedals, brakes, shifters and mechs

I saw a couple of decent looking rear mechs one of which I'll be needing, but what I did find a real lack of was chainsets and cranks, finding zero in the UK and that's the one of the other parts i'll need. I'll also need a wheelset to swap out the mismatched set but I hadn't started looking for them yet, I was just a bit disappointed in my chainset search.

Not long in all honesty, only really today, but am surprised at the lack in comparison to say XT M730. Today I bought my first roadie in 25 years and it's nearly as old as that too. I'd had my eye on a few over the past year. I remember 105 being released in the 80's. Hopefully i'll be able to get some nice used parts that I need. It looks like I need a rear mech, wheelset (I may only need a front but I reckon it's slim chance of one on it's own to match) and chainset, the rest of the bike is complete.
Hopefully know more when it arrives. Seems to be quite a popular model in the UK.

I used to find huge amounts of the champagne finish 105, it always set a bike off nicely. The grey early 105 you are looking for is pretty rare as you have found. It was only about for a short while. I haven't seen any for some years now, even attached to bikes.

I've seen it with RSX, once it was everywhere, no its hard to find. Tricolour 600, everywhere NOS, then nowhere... (i'm talking car boot sales and the tip, my small little world!)
