Just got off the phone about half an hour ago from Dave March at UniversalCycleCentre. He thinks the code indicates it is genuine and also thinks he might know the guy who sprayed it from thew original colour.

I've emailed him back and he's promised to get back to me with what information he can offer.

Will post up the email he sends back.

Also interestingly he reckons these weren't actually built by RSP but the team frames that were custom geometry were made by smaller frame builders to the riders specification and then stamped up by the RS division.. which would explain the potential for two different dies on the BB.

Perfect!!!! This is the work that needs to be done before claiming it as a Fignon bike. You should however realise that the frame still is a very nice frame even if not Laurent Fignon's. I used to work in a frameshop and we refinished many many frames and it is not possible to remove all signs of the original paint, no matter how thorough you are. You can generally find hints in and around the BB shell, the steer tube, the allen key brake fitments and inside the seat tube. The effort that you are making now is well worthwhile.

Dear Paul,

I can speak english.

This frame was built in 1990 (90) – was the first frame produced for this season (1) and was made for Laurent Fignon (LF).

This frame has been produced by Cyfac for CASTORAMA Team and for your info, we could repaint it in its initial color as we did for another UK customer at the beginning of the year ( see picture attached).

Best Regards,

Aymeric Le Brun,

Objet : S'il vous plaît pouvez-vous aider? Laurent Fignon frame?

Bonsoir,

Je suis désolé pour mon mauvais français écrit.

Pouvez-vous parler ou d'écrire en anglais?

Je vais écrire en anglais si c'est ok?

I have what i have been told is an old Raleigh Castorama and upon inspection many people seem to believe that it was ridden by Lauren Fignon.

It has been said that Cyfac built these? Is that true?

If so could you confirm the identity as a true Laurent Fignon frame?

It has obviously been re-painted since it was manufactured..

Pictures attached.

Many thanks in advance,

Kindest regards

Paul Bennett

Photos ci-jointes.

Merci d'avance,

Cordialement

Paul Bennett

There you go - provenance proven. Got to be happy with that.

I'd add that to your ebay sale description. There's many a bike on there that purports to be something it isnt...

Did they give you a price to refinish it?

Which is mine!!! Note the frame in the thread has the same slack seat tube angles as my bike, which is also 1990 and was Thierry Maries. This is a Cyrille Guimard trait who was the team boss of Renault, Systeme U, Super U and Castorama.

It was €300 - and everything bar the heron emblems on the seat tubes are painted.

That sounds very reasonable.

I also thought it added to the provenance if that makes any sense. I had no choice but to respray as the previous owner painted it with a paint brush, so I thought send it back to where it was made.
