Dropouts

I have a 69 Claude butler that looks like the rear stays have been squashed a bit. The frame is sound and it is now with Kevin winter for a respray.
The question is how wide should the dropouts be? Currently they are 120mm. Was there a standard size. I haven't got any wheels from the era at the moment to try and see if it is ok as if is.
Any suggestions ?

120mm should be correct. But, a quick Google search yielded examples of the Butler frames with 114, 115, and 116mm rear dropout spacing. http://hilarystone.com/frameset9.html
Based on that information, I assume your frame was spread to the 120mm, to fit a more common wheelset, at some point.

I would suggest getting the wheelset you want to use prior to completing the respray, to minimize the chance of the new paint cracking if you end up with a non 120mm rear hub.
