Currently in my sixth consecutive year since tub only and quite contented. Cheaper market end stuff - both glue and tape affixed - over about 2000 miles a year, easy roads with a Red Label GP4 rear and later GEL280 front. The light bu**er needs some additional spoke spannering at times, but both are still 'round' (maybe at least as round as Cav/Swift's recently). Besides, ye cannae, under any realistic scenario, contemplate swapping out Columbus SL onto 'tyres'. It's not gonna happen... :-).

Just a note to recommend Continental Giro 22mm tubs. I'd long used Vittoria Rallye 21mm but they recently became unavailable so was forced to buy the slightly dearer Giro tubs instead. I put a new pair on for that Alpine Raid the other week and suffered one tiny nick on the rear and no obvious wear on the front tub at all. The rear wore down a bit more than the front due to with my 13 stones sitting on it for a 7 days solid!

We also encountered some really appalling L'Eroica roads, (gravel, potholes etc) that I was SURE we'd puncture on, but nope, the Giros remained fully inflated and like I said, only one small nick in the rear where I'm certain the Vittorias would have been cut to ribbons and blown.

Full marks to Coninental.

Great post - I've found acetone great for cleaning a variety of parts. Also for softening powder coating (soak in a sealed tub or cling film rags to a frame to avoid evaporation) prior to removal
Doesn't have to be expensive - £13.20 for 5 litres from the Nail and Beauty Link in Birmingham ....

Hello all,
I am currently collating parts for a sprint bike & have recently bought a pair of FIAMME tubular rims, the outside diameter of which is 635mm.
What size tubular tyre do I need? is a 700 too big?
I've noticed on some old tyres they say 23-28, does that mean they will stretch from a 23" to a 28" or am I being silly and this refers to a 23mm wide tyre to fit a 28" wheel? (mixing measuring systems just for fun)

I'm completly new to tubular tyres & my appologies if these questions have been asked before, all light hearted ribbing will be taken squarly on the chin.... :oops:

635 sounds like it'll be a "normal" sized road tubular, so 700. There aren't that many sizes for tubular, so i can't think it's likely to be anything else. For refererence, a 700 road clincher rim actually has a nominal bead diameter of 622 mm, and a 27" road tyre has a diameter of 630
23-28 will be, as you guessed, a 23mm wide tubular to fit a 28" rim..... (they also refer to 700 road tubulars as 28" for some reason)

in fact the out side diameter of clinchers is 633mm it is the bead seat diameter that is 622mm
