I have recently bought what I believe is a 1995 Rourke frame and forks.

The build is going to take some time, as first off it needs a respray and secondly I want to fit good quality light weight parts and hence my post.

Leaving aside Chris King, what other really good 1" threaded headset ( preferably in black) would you recommend?

26.4mm crown race I presume. Campagnolo Chorus or record are pretty good but so are old Shimano 105, ultegra or DA headsets.

Tange Falcon on my 70's Falcon San-Remo :D .

Nothing wrong with them at all apart from the brand name............

Yes 26.4mm crown fortunately, I have had to play the JIS game in the past, but not this time.

My automatic response would be "Stronglight A9", but the decent (alloy/roller bearing) version only comes in silver; the budget all-steel one is black.

+1 ^^. The Stronglight A9 - these have been in production for over 20 years and are def in keeping with a retro quality steel frameset. Lightweight & needle bearings (the alloy cups have removable steel liners) , adjust and forget. http://www.stronglight.com/stronglight/ ... keyProd=A9

Available from many sources including:

Avoid the cheaper ball-bearing steel black A9 headset - not in the same class as the alloy silver model IMO

Miche's Primato 1" headset on the whole isn't bad either and uses similar bearings, but the upper head tube cup is in softish alloy and prone to deforming on installation IME (also it has quite a high stack so may not suit all steerer tubes). The threadless one on my CX bike seems to be surviving more by good fortune than anything else. :(

Not easy to find and I'm not sure they even do black but FT Bolongna are superb headsets, they manufacture headsets for Colnago. Very small bearings make them super smooth.

Thanks, lots of good info.

Stronglight was my first port of call, and if I have to go silver, I will, as it may make a nice contrast to the frame, which I plan to have satin black.

I'll look at the others too and see what I can find.
