Is there anything in the model numbers of Shimano brakes that identifies them as long reach (49-57mm)?
I'm looking at eighties/early nineties stuff

R number today. R450 and R650 but that's new.

Back in 80's 90's I don't think the model number made a distinction. There was say 1055 short and long drop.
