Setting up canti brakes with post type brake block fitting

I am not particularly familiar with cantis and am struggling to set-up a set.

The biggest issue is that the brake blocks are fitted by clamping onto a 'post' which comes out of the centre of the rear (!) of the block. They are this type: http://www.slanecycles.com/aztec-contro ... 18727.html

After a couple of hours, I can't really see a failsafe way to align these blocks. Are they really as much of a pain in the proverbial as they seem?

To add insult to injury, I also can't really tighten the securing nuts enough to stop the pads rotating.

Getting these right is the final job on this build and so I would be grateful for any words of wisdom!

If the posts are flattened or narrow then the retaining nut will reach the end of the threads before it tightens.........try a couple of extra washers as an experiment.

...then

good point above. we always used to partially tighten them, tweak them with slip joints then (while still holding them) finally tighten them. worked every time! pain in the backside though...
