Disc Brakes on Road Bikes?

Why??
Maybe I'm a purist, but I'd rather not see this...I did read some arguments in a magazine for the benefit of the manufacturing of carbon rims if no braking surface was required.
Anybody like the idea of discs?...Looks like we're going to have keep swapping Calipers in the Sales threads in the short term...
 
I love the idea and so does Salsa for 2013. Enve are making disc road fork too for Salsa. Rim brakes can be good but all I can see with discs is advantages. The downsides to me a not really downsides.

I would love to have the cash to get a steel race frame in columbus XCR or R953 built with discs mounts with a steel fork and disc mounts and fit out with XTR hubs, velocity A23 rims 32 spoke 3x wheels. The brakes will have to BB7 with 160mm rotors, more options will become available I hope. Formula have a hydraulic disc system ready for realease soon.

My dream all weather bike.

It is only a matter of time before hydraulics and electronics are taking care of braking and gear changing on all the high end road bikes.

I rather like what Shand are doing with their bikes, although, they are not full on racing frames.

A Skinnymalinky with disks would be rather nice.

On the downside, I think there is a weight penalty with disks, and the performance is not always up with the best rim brakes.
 
After my rear wheel on my daily bike began to 'dish' after 3000 miles I am going for Disks simply for maintenance and longevity reasons, as well as wet weather performance (I get pretty fed up when my wheel, tyre, guards and clothes get covered in black brake grime!).

Plus off road snippets down old railway lines etc is much more pleasureable without the grinding noise of pads against a wet gritted up sandy rim ;)

As for the genuine road benefits. Reduced rim weight is a potential benefit without sacrificing braking performance on a carbon rim.
I think I would rather have carbon rims with disk breaks on a long decent rather than using rim brakes on a full carbon rim, I have seen a hell of a lot of de-laminated carbon rims from long descents. :shock:

Avid are already bringing out a lighter weight version of their BB7 for road specific use in 140 and 160mm.

The big boys, Colnago (new C59) and Cannondale amongst others will have done their testing I am sure. Their reputations are too big to be tainted by doing something which isn't 'right'.

Hydraulics are already an option too. Hope do a Drop Bar kit, as well as TRP with their Parabox set up.

just need Shimano to come up with a electronic/hydraulic shifter and it will be even better .
 
Waiting for this for a long time.
Weighing 95 kg and living in a hilly, rainy place, rim brakes are no good. They indeed are good when rims are new, but after one or two seasons of riding in the wet the brake surface is damaged and they simply perform very poorly.
