Campagnolo 8 speed Avanti? ergo problems?

I have what I believe to be a pair of 8 speed Avanti ergos, there is only one gear lever ie it is moulded in one 'L' shaped piece of black plastic, they do appear to work ok but before I start looking for new hoods does anyone know of any inherent problems with them?

hey chambo,

i've worked on bikes with a few sets, i've found that depending on the age they can be fine but worn hoods suggest lots of use, i would suggest you phone mercian cycles in derby, they used to be the service centre for the uk but the guy that fixed stuff in their shop has set up on his own, can't remember his name but they now recommend him for servicing/advice and for some of the spares including hoods.

p.s i'm a campagnolo fan myself, i got 95,98 and 2001 record groups and never had a problem with any except for expected where, and all ergos are still working perfectly.

The chap who does campag spares is here > http://www.italiancycleproducts.co.uk/

Used him plenty of times. Good service.

All the campag stuff is rebuildable and spares are available. Some of the older ergos had an issue with an internal spring post breaking as detailed here > http://www.campyonly.com/howto/ergo_rebuild.html. A set of older veloce levers I bought had just this problem. The levers were easy enough to work on.

A bit late maybe. I'v usded Campy Avanti in the past. The inner lever sheared off completely at a very unappropriate moment, just before scaling the Pennines on the return leg of LEL in '97. A few years later the same happened to a Mirage inner lever. After upgrading again I never experienced the same problem anymore.
