Help identifying a frame

Hi

I bought this recently for the princely sum of £60... The bike is nothing special kit wise, although I quite like the stem and bars...

My main question regards the frame. It has been repainted and sports Woodrup decals... It doesn't look like a Woodrup to me...

The really thin seat stays seem to point at quality... There is a serial number stamped left to right on the bottom of the BB shell, but it is illegible.

I would also like to know the approximate era of the bike.

It rides lovely and has covered seventy miles over the weekend with ease. The main issue is that there is a split in the seat tube (caused by an extreme stuck post) and will need significant work. The split is not moving despite riding however...

I would like to know what it is to assess whether repair is a viable option. Woodrups have quoted £95 plus VAT to put a new seat tube in and then there would be the cost of the repaint... I find this reasonable but can't see the point on a lower end frame... Any info appreciated!

Might be wishful thinking but was browsing the flickr Bob Jackson archive earlier and found a frame with exactly the same features - right down to the finest details...

Typically it was a picture of a bare frame that was awaiting respray, so only had the posters word that it was a Jackson frame... Will try and link the photo's on here later...

If it is a Carlton, I'll probably leave it as is... not much point going to much trouble for a relatively mass produced bike...

Apart from the light bracket boss, the forks look similar to this:

Which is a 1979 Carlton Continental. The lugs on the frame look different though, more like the ones on here:

P1000143.JPG

Which is an unknown frame, but very similar is many respects to the Continental. If the serial number is L>R on the BB then it is going to be a post buyout Carlton (if that is what it is), if all English threads then it is probably going to be 1960's or possibly early 70's. The purple one up there is, as I say, a 1979 and is all Raleigh threads.

It could be anything though, I have seen such lugs many different bikes.

Don't knock it if it is a woodrup though. It may be worth dropping into Leeds' other great frame builder to see if they can shed some light.

Hi, looking at it I would say it was late sixties, early seventies, the lugs are Prugnat from that era, if it had a full wrapover stay my first thought would of been a Holdsworth Mistral. Therefore I think ( check the seatpost is 27.2 ) its a mid range quality bike ( brake cable guides are fairly simple, but bridge is nice ), build by ?? Mercian, Woodrup, Condor ??? The serial number will help, is it on the steerer ? Its all a matter of putting the clues together I'm afraid. Checkout http://www.merciancycles.co.uk/history/40/1966-catalogue the King of Mercia model is nearly there, but the wrapover stay ! Happy hunting, Terry

Took advice of Woodrups prior to purchase... and having had one in the past, it just doesn't fit somehow...

I love Woodrups and would be over the moon if it were one!

The frame is identical to this on the Bob Jackson Flickr feed...

The head badge is a Woodrup one... the frame has been resprayed and I think the decals were added at this point...

If I don't get anywhere with my research, I'll drop into Woodrups with it...
