I'm looking for a front mech this bike:

http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=210715

but not entirely sure what to ask / look for???

Bike is circa 1978 vintage and the drivetrain is a mix of TA / Stronglight (chainset & BB), Maillard (freewheel), Simplex (rear mech and lower downtube cable guide) and Campagnolo (hubs, bar end shifters and upper downtube cable stops). A mixture is fine but I think I'd like the FM to be Campy or Simplex and of late 1970s vintage.

Main thing is I need a front mech that has an outer cable stop on it. The frame has no BB shell cable guide so I'm using the Simplex one supplied which I think will work better with a small bit of outer cable between it and the front mech as it routes the cables over the BB shell. Does this discount Campy?

I do have a Simplex mech but it's a cheapo pushrod type with what looks like a nipple slot in place of a cable clamp (?) so I'm not keen on that or the Sachs-Huret I have as it's all steel so quite heavy!

Thanks for reading,
Al

1970's Suntour front mech's usually had a cable stop, some of them worked back to front though :)

I'd personally buy a clamp on cable guide and use a Campag / Shimano jobby :D

Cheers Shaun,

I take it you mean the ones where the inner runs underneath a kind of semi-enclosed tube? All the cable guides I have act as stops, so the cable enters naked and exits inside an outer cable. The only one I have that's like yours is for the rear cable with a stop for the front cable, maybe I should look for a twin tube one?

righto

just so you know, the one I have is like this:

rear cable exits fine naked (as the final stop before the mech is on top of the chainstay) but I'm thinking it will not send the front cable in a desirable way unless it's inside an outer * hence looking for cable stop type fm

do any campy f mechs have cable stops?

* or would it?

Hmmm. There is a little diamond under the downtube to locate some friction shifters and would originally have had a double clamp on like the velobase Link IMHO. I have this set upon My Falcon San-Remo...not mine but same

Someone has added bar end shifters and used an upside down campag band to convert it back to naked cable in place of the downtube shifters.

Looked on your rebuild thread and can't see any braze-ons for a front mech?

Personally I'd still use a campag double band to take the cable on top of the BB naked.

I never used to use anything for the front mech cable, just routed it under the BB and straight up to the mech. There's nowhere for it to go once it's in place and tightened and it won't wear the BB shell.

However, if you're interested, I have a spare Campag clamp-on guide like this (but not in quite as good condition sorry!)

Thanks, I might well be interested in that, quite keen to keep the cable routing over the BB... quite delicate paint etc. :D

Hi,

Yes that's the exact set-up I'm after I think having had chance to think again. Although a Simplex mech that swings has come across my radar so not sure now :?

The diamond on the frame I'm building up was indeed used for the downtube Campy double cable stop as you say, with the Simplex tunnels at the bottom which take an inner and allow it to exit naked or 'clothed'. Not sure how it was set up originally as it came to me 1x6 speed. and yes, mech would ideally be band-on. I have an adaptor but would rather not use it.
