i have the urge for a CX bike at the mo

how does one go about sizing for one. my assumption would be "slightly smaller than your road bike"

my current roadbike is a "big" 56 (i.e it has a 57 top tube)

should i be looking for a 55/56 TT?

Having extra toptube clearance certainly helps if you need to put a foot down on rough terrain. I run my CX bikes slightly shorter / more layback to get more weight over the back wheel for grip and with less bar to saddle drop to give greater room for shifting your weight on the bike. Some guys run an identical set-up to their road bikes.

X bike

With X bikes finishing in 2nd and 5th place in Paris Roubaix, you can bet that they were set up same as the riders road bike.
Normally you use a stem either 1/2 or 1 cm shorter than your road bike and move the saddle back the same amount,
I would use the same size frame as the actual frame design takes account for softer angles and a longer wheel base so its more comfortable to ride.
Raising the bars can help as you do not want to be as low down like a road bike..
