Hi. First post for me, so I'll jump straight in with a question. I've had a look through the FAQs and searched on the bike name but didn't turn anything up. I was directed here from a couple of other cycle forums I inhabit.

The other day I popped round to see a friend who has been given a bike by her neighbour. He was a keen athlete back in the day (ran for England apparently). He apparently bought the bike in 1949 and has had it ever since. It's been unused for some time and it shows.

The faded paint has "Sid Patterson" and "Sun" on it. It's got steel/chrome 27 inch wheels, with the rear sporting a flip flop hub. Seat stays are as thin as thin. Lugs are moderately ornate, with chrome on the fork crown.

Wiki tells me "Sid Patterson (14 August 1927 – 29 November 1999) was a world champion amateur and professional track cyclist from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia."

I've even found a copy of the catalogue online, which suggests it is a "Soliel D'or" model with 531 tubing.

So is it worth a small fortune, an interesting find, or fit for the scrap heap?

Hi, have a look at http://www.peterbrueggeman.com/cr/catalogues/sun_1953.pdf within this catalogue is a Sid Patterson. It is an interesting find, sadly not worth a fortune, but a very nice vintage bike, please don't throw it. I can date it, if you can get the serial number, it should be on the rear dropout - guessing it starts with an 'S' or 'T'. A picture would help. Terry.

Thanks for that Terry - that's the catalogue I found. Stupidly I put in my original post it was a Soliel D'Or. Of course its a Sid. Patterson. I'll get a picture over the weekend, but be warned it ain't pretty - the paint is just about gone. I'll havea look for the serial number though - thanks for the pointer as to where to look.
