There was a post about that nutter who was offering a bog standard Bianchi
for $9000 on Bikeforums recently.
I get the impression Americans are a bit more obsessed about the status of bikes than people on here (fpr example), so maybe there are people out there who are prepared to pay such insane prices.

This is however not a bog standard Bianchi, nor even a bog standard Campagnoo headset. These "smokey anodized" Century headsets are truly rare and if you have a bike with a full century gruppo that needs a new headset to make complete, I can expect somebody being silly enough to pay big money. A set of century hubs sold not that long ago for over $600. A set of century brakes for a similar price...

I'm pretty sure a specialist could put any finish on any headset for the price of a few crates of beer. People must have their own printing presses to pay those kinds of stupid prices. Or just be mad.

and the thing is that the century stuff is hideous anyway!

why oh why would you take a lovely piece of campagnolo corsa record equipment and dip it in a tea pot?!!

madness!!

yuk. :p

I can promise you that it is almost if not completely impossible to get a specialist match the finish and have it weather in the same way as the remaining parts of the Century gruppo. I do agree with you that I don't understand why anybody would want to pay such prices, but then it is also true that nobody has of yet paid the price asked for the headset. I can understand paying a minor supplement to get something unique for a unique bike, but the NOS C-record headsets sell for around $100-150, so even a supplement can bring you up to the asked price.

It my view that here are many delusional sellers of cycles and cycle parts on ebay.

It would seem that, for instance, any well made English lugged frame is worth well into 3 figures if the ideas of some of our friends across the pond are to be believed.

This thread is funny because it is reflection of this site.

"You paid HOW MUCH for a knackered twenty year old mountain bike?"

At least this headset is new.

I've got a a room full of Campag C-Record stuff that I have been acquiring for quite some time now. None of it is Century. I don't care for it. The fact that a couple of years later Campag started selling lesser groupsets with a matt black finish doesn't impress me either. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen that lesser stuff (Chorus, Athena, etc.) being passed off as Century C-Record.

Apart from the fact that I find the shiny silver stuff much more appealling than any of the dark stuff, the other two reasons I don't like Century are:

- Scratches and wear and tear really stand out. Scuff marks on cranks are the worst. You hardly notice a scratch on the silver stuff, but the black just provides a high contrast colour for any imperfection. I buy my stuff to use, so if it looks like crap in 6-months, then what's the point?

- Prices can get pretty insane for the Century stuff. Ironicallt, it wasn't so popular back in the day, so there was much less of it made. That has helped keep prices high.

The price our US friend is asking is crazy, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone offered somewhere around half what he is asking. In any event, this guy takes the buscuit: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0635780764 .
