Not sure about taping on old glue but you could always put a layer of glue on before the tape if you were worried about contact area.
I use 2 or 3 layers of glue on both rim and tub and then a layer of tape, it takes a little longer but I have never had one come off. That id for cross tubs though which are often run at much lower pressures.
