Gear levers on the downtube an Peugeot 504 support cars - both things that the world of pro cycling would benefit from a bit more of. And I love the enthusiastic chap in the pantalon rouge http://****.blogspot.co.uk/ about six minutes in on the Alpe de Huez :D

Did I hear correctly at 2mins40secs, "there's that lad who just had the kidney transplant"? You don't hear Phil Ligget and Paul Sherwin coming out with lines like that now do you! classic footage... and commentary

Some really great stuff here Lincolnwho, I vividly remember that last footage from 88 as a 15yr old schoolboy. Phil Liggetts typically captivating commentary and Rocky inspired backing track give me goosebumps even now

Right. I know I'm going to be flamed here but, quite frankly I don't care. It is only my opinion anyway.

I miss this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VS9d-I5Ixg

I enjoyed Wiggin's victory this summer I really did. However I miss this sort of riding. I know Pantani was on "super high octane fuel" rather than unleaded 95 RON but it was why I started watching cycling in the first place.

Rather, it was the LeMond era that got me started but the interest continued with Indurain, Rominger, Chiappuci and Bugno et al that kept me coming back for more.

Speaking of more: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZ9CTH76xMo

Pantani was my rider whom I looked out for. Believe it or not, I was once a climber, dancing up the big Welsh climbs despite my student hangover. The exploits of this man were something playing in my head like an old 8mm film egging me on in my own little way. (Oh, 28" waist, where art thou?)

So now, with Youtube on and a glass of good single malt what am I watching? Is it Dave Brailsford typing wattage numbers into a laptop so that he can tell the Sky robots whether they need to chase or not over his digital radio?

No its the flawed genius Marco Pantani flying up the Alp by the seat of his pants.
