Ive just got hold of a Carlton Continental in great condition but with no seat and seatpost - does anyone. Know what size seat post it should be? Its complicated because the one I was going to use just doesnt fit!

Thanks in advance!

You might be able to tell if its Truwell by feeling for the vertical seam down the inside of the seat tube.
It was cold rolled and electric seam welded, used on raleigh for many years.
Guessing it's likely 26.4 mm.

If it's Reynolds 531 tubing, it'll be a 27.2mm seat post.........

531 had many differing size seat tubes, 26.2, 26.4, 26.8 & 27.2 from personal experience.

I'd suggest going to the lbs & ask them to size it for you with their calipers.

Tony, Pre 1980 British small builders normally used butted 531 seat tube 20/23 G, which would take 27.2mm. Inside diam approx 27.3, as the seat lug generally distorted a little.
Some may have used a down tube for extra strength, 20 / 23 /20 G, which would take 26.4mm. , or possibly plain gauge 20.
26.4 was quite common in Italian frames, in the better ones with a small sleeve brazed inside the seat lug.
26.8 would fit our 21G, 26.2 a 19G.
