Campy crank/chainring question

Apologies for the likely rookie question but not familiar with campy stuff and 11 speeds.

Have a frame with a square taper BB fitted and wantto get a crankset. Frame already has athena 11 spd front and rear derailleur.


In terms of cranks- there are these options:
Photo 1 which looks like it will fit the BB but will this be compatible with an 11 spd groupset


Alternatively there is a photo 2 but does this require removal of the square taper BB?

in photo 1, if they're 10 speed rings (lokos like they're not), then yes they will work with 11 speed. and will fit square taper, but check the length required and the length of the one installed

in photo 2, those will definitely fit 11 speed, but need an external BB, so the square taper one fitted must be removed

If it's a 10 or 11 speed model, it will work. It usually says so either on the crank, the rings, or both

The bottom bracket fitted in your frame looks to be either Chorus or Record and the axle length will be 102mm. If you look on the drive side cup it should be written on the outside along with the type of threading (1.37x24 or 36x24). This means that the bottom bracket will only be compatible with either a Chorus or Record chainset because of the 102mm axle length. To fit the Athena chainset in photo 1 would require a bottom bracket with an axle length of 111mm.
As foz rightly says above, the chainset in photo 2 will need the square taper bottom bracket removing and Campagnolo Ultra torque bottom bracket cups fitting.

What do you guys think? Cost wise and saleability once built up?
1)Would you try keep everything 11spd Athena since I have the front and rear derailleur and brakes. But need wheels with 11spd cassette, 11 spd chainset and Athena brake levers.
2) as above but just use an easier to find? 10 spd chainset and cassette and brake levers
3) sell the Athena stuff and go old school campy?

First question: is this a bike for yourself to ride or is it to sell? If to sell, break it for bits. You get more money that way.
Personally I would get rid of the 11 speed stuff as a long-term ownership prospect. The ergos aren't serviceable and don't last well. Athena has the flawed indexed front too.
Early 10 speed has the better second-generation round-top Ergos (avoid QS) with the fully trimmable front mech. There are plenty of secondhand bits around AND the ergos are easily rebuildable, unlike Shimano. All Campag 9-speed and up hubs are compatible with 9/10/11 speed.
Personally I run 9-speed pre-2001, as it never, ever needs adjustment and is fully rebuildable. Campag 11-speed stuff is much less robust or serviceable. They also fiddled with spring tensions so early 10 speed is not really compatible with later (strong springs of old mech combined with later ergos tends to wear the ergos out more rapdly).

Could you direct me to an online resource that explains the different campy groupsets and compatibilities. I've tried googling. velobase doesn't seem to have much on 10spd chorus...

I'm confused as to why they have different bottom bracket lengths and which types of campy groupsets are compatible with which. Am I right in thinking that older chorus groupsets are not compatible with the BB I have? so am I restricted to only 10spd groupsets?

Just wary of looking for components and making sure they work together correctly

9 and 10 speed Chorus and Record take the short 102mm BB. (1996 onwards roughly), the others (Mirage, Veloce, Daytona, Centaur) take 110mm. There are three different crank forgings, hence the different BB lengths. The forging for Mirage, Veloce, Daytona, Centaur is common, the difference being in finish and rings. Chorus has its own, initially 5-arm but used the Record forging (with 5th bolt hidden beind the crank) in later years.

Compared to the total menagerie of Shimano BB lengths it's a doddle. Campag tech docs and exploded views are widely available by Internet search.

last stupid question - I assume 9 and 10 speed components are not interchangeable? e.g. rear 10 spd derailleur and front 9 spd derailleur
