Shimano 6401/6402 compatibility

Hi,

I have a tricolour 6402 8 speed rear hub which the bearing cups and cones are knackered, however I have a 6401 with good cups and cones etc.

Are the bodies interchangeable? I want an 8 speed hub, can I put the 8 speed cassette body on the 6401 hub body?

Does anyone know if the bodies are the same?

There is a difference between the I believe, there were 3 types. A UG or a UG/HG or a HG only.

The difference is in how the cassettes fix also. Also not sure but there might be a difference between the one used for a 126mm 7 speed compared to a 130mm 8 speed version.

Actually you are talking about the freehub body and not the hub body and there is a difference between free hub bodies

I was asking if the actual hub bodies on 6401/6402 are compatible, they’re both UG/HG cassette comparable. I know about the different cassette freewheel bodies, that’s not what I’m asking.

I found replacement 6402 hubs anyway so doesn’t matter.
