Dawes Imperial rebuild

Retro Newbie
It’s about 1995 vintage. There was play in the bottom bracket before I removed it for spraying. I understand this can be replaced with a modern sealed BB. I want to keep the Super Custom chainset you can see in the picture. What measurements do I need to take and will I keep the same drive shaft? As you can see I am a bit in the dark on this one.

Thanks

Steve

Re:

It will be a standard 68 width on the shell, all you need to measure is the length of the axle, the length of the red line in the picture.

Headset

Thanks for that BB has been ordered.

The other area showing wear is the headset. (Movement in the front forks).

Can this be fixed by using individual ball bearings to replace the existing caged ball bearings? Or will I need a replacement headset?

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve

the first thing to check on the headset is if it is showing signs of 'Brinneling', check the faces where the bearings run to see if they are smooth. If they have pits or feel rippled the headset will not turn smoothly it will feel notched, if the latter is the case replace. If they are smooth just replace with loose bearings.
