Any Swinnerton Gurus here?

Re:

Anyhow, all that said, I guess that frame was built much earlier than mid-80s. Based on my paper boy bike,
something from the late 60s early 70s? Looks a nice frame; either a club rider or winter trainer?

Thanks Woz, that was my feeling regarding date, thanks for info.

After Swinnerton's, Brian Rourke was the manager for Clive Stuart when they opened their shop in Burslem. When they went bust he started his own business. I used to race against Brian (and Les West) at Newcastle in the late 60's. Roy was a good track rider in his day especially on the old Newcastle track. He passed on tips on how to ride it to me. Compared to modern 'velodromes' it was almost flat!

John Herety married one of the Swinnerton daughters as did Martin Earley.

I had a chat with Brian a couple of months ago... for 3 hours. Reminded me what a fascinating guy he is. He’s 80 next year

From what I heard years ago,Mercians built some frames for them back in the day.

If you hadn't said it, I would have :). I seem to remember that it was either Brian Rourke or Les West that told me (I think!) and if anyone should know it would be one of them! Not heard the Frank Herety connection though - another schoolday moment!

AFAIR Mercians built the Custom frames no idea if they were involved in the of the peg framesets

Re:

Just taken a look at the frame, no-one has apparently noticed the dropouts - not seen their like before: Campagnolo yes, forged ? No.

Pressed dropouts; hence my comment.

Rk.

Almost finished.

It's a lovely little bike, I am building it for a friends Niece.
Since the pictures were taken I have put a longer section of cable outer to rear brake.
She is coming for a Bike fit over Christmas so will be able to finish it off.
So far;
Huret Gearset.
Weinmann Brakeset.
Maillard hubs and pedals.
Ambrosio Campione del Mondo bars.

What colour bartap?

Frank Swinnerton frames built by George Longstaff are very highly sought after! If it IS one of his, it'll have his initials (GL) stamped on the BB...
