Changing the rear tyre on a newly purchased 1960 Raleigh Sport Tourist, the chain dropped off the front sprocket. Any suggestions as to how I can find my way into the chainguard to set the chain right?

I presume you mean "chaincase".
There is a small removable plate next to the chainring, which is on a removable disc about the size of the chain ring. This is like a tin lid, just lever it off.
When working on these it helped to be able to clamp the bike with the back wheel downwards, take off the removable part by the rear cog, and take out the chain connecting link. Obviously you can,t reach that at present.
Then we put a length of wire in each end of the chain, so that we could keep it in position, if it had the rear facing roadster ends.

Ah yes - I hadn't noticed that the disc was removable. Many thanks. Chain is back in its proper position!
