Hi....My new bike has a 50T chainring [Shimano 130bcd] and I want to replace it with a 46T ring.

However, my bike has a 6 speed chain. I cannot find a chainring to match and so will need a 'modern' chainring....one that works in a 8 or 9 transmission.

My question is will the chain work ok with the new chainring? I will get either a TA replacement or Stronglight or Velosolo.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Re:

It should work just fine.

Personally I'd avoid anything too fancy as some of the elaborate ramps and pins on the more expensive ones can cause issues if the chain is too wide. The stronglight 5083 cheap ones have always worked great for me.

Any 8 speed chainring will be exactly the same as the old 6 speed one, in terms of tooth width. 6/7/8 are all 3/32". 9 speed is slightly narrower, but a 9 speed chainring will still work perfectly fine. Even 10 and 11 speed will probably work OK
