Holdsworth background

Yes, definitely a Mistral. I have one the same. They appeared in about 1964, and it was the top of the range Holdsworthy frame, built with 531 double butted throughout.
Yours has top quality kit on it too, and almost certainly a time trial iron with tubs and five speed gears.
A nice bike.

Re: Decals

Anyone guide me as to what decal was in the seattube of an early 1960s (63ish) Mistral? The Holdsworth brochures show something but not enough of it to identify.

It looks like it's a Holdsworth badge mounted on a thick white band of paint with two thinner bands of white above and below, both lined in whatever colour the lugs are lined in. Sound right?

This is what you need from HLoyd's:

Downtube (This is same font as in '64 catalogue pic.)
AR9 HOLDSWORTH downtube transfer. VERY similar to AR2 but no "WF" at the beginning. All uprights curved and changed detail e.g. no "figure 8" in side "O"'s. Printed plain black, plain gold, gold/black or black/gold onto clear. State which colour!

& Seat tube
AR3 HOLDSWORTH "prancing horse"-type head/seat. "WORTHY" across top.

These are the same decals I placed on my 1965 Typhoon rebuild.

Mistral decal has same style of font in a swag as my '65 Typhoon (#29953) and I have seen placed on either side TT as pic and in later years as a single decal placed obliquely on top of TT.

Per HLloyd's:
AR13 HOLDSWORTH top tube names from 1950's. Curved gold script inside small cream "swag". Model name Hurricane, Cyclone, Cyclone Deluxe, Monsoon, Tornado, Whirlwind, Typhoon, Zephyr, Super Mistral, or Mistral. Don’t forget to CHOOSE! PRICED PER PAIR.

Also included pic of a Mistral #29260 (399 higher than yours) that date of manufacture is 1964 per Dave Scrimshaw's data. Original owner apparently purchased in 1966. Looks to be in original paint and gives a good example of paint scheme that was often used. As described in catalogue paint choice was optional. Not a great photo but also shows placement of Mistral decal.
