I thought I'd post something on here about a pair of cranks I have. I purchased them in 1999 as I wanted a crankset for my time trial bike and went for these, as they were the best cranks available at the time. The tests that were done on the cranks showed them to be the most rigid cranks you could buy. The shape of them were another major selling point for me as they had obvious aero advantages over the standard Record/Dura-Ace etc cranks of the time.

I have since changed the cranks for FSA Vigorelli, but thankfully had the foresight to keep the Zipps as it is obvious these are extremely rare. Searching about information on these cranks on the internet delivers very little; it seems that less than 200 were produced by Zipp, and of those the mountain bike crankset seems to have been more popular (the spider is smaller to take suitable MTB ring sizes). Also when you bear in mind that many of the cranks failed during production, I have a very rare set of cranks indeed.

The condition of my cranks is extremely good. I am considering selling them, possibly through a specialist auction house or I might put them up on here; if you are interested please get in touch. In the mean time, here it is. For your information the crank length is 175mm, chainring fit is 130BCD. The bottom bracket fitting is a square taper, the axle length has to be quite long, around 117mm; you only need to see the girth of the cranks to see that! Crank bolt fitting is self-extracting.

Overall a pretty cool retro component, don't you think!

Very cool! Have they got metal inserts at the threads and tapers or are they all-carbon?

Yes they have metal inserts for the pedal threads.
Where they fasten to the bottom bracket it looks like this area is a type of metal as well, under the carbon fibre.

There is something else I should have mentioned in my original post, they are in fact the world's first carbon crankset, hollow too! They were way ahead of their time when they were available :)

Would you be willing to part ways with them? I have a Zipp 2001 that would be a perfect matched with this. Let me know if at all interested and I can make you an offer.
