Derailleur compatability, dura ace 7402

Retroid

Dirt Disciple
Hi, I have a dura ace rear derailleur, model 7402 and it also reads integrated 8sis. I need some shifters, frame mounted to match. Does 8sis mean I have to find 8 speed shifter or can I use 7.
I know the 740 series are interchangeable, but wasn't sure on the above issue. Taaaaaaa

Re:

You can use a 7s shifter, spacing is the same on the cassette between sprockets.

7 and 8 spacing is not the same for Shimano (it is for Campag). 4.8mm spacing instead of 7 speed's 5.0. Campag uses 5.0 on both.

To get it right use an 8 speed shifter.

It will have to be a DA 8 speed shifter, any other will not work (apart from DA 9 speed, which will work with 8 speed dura ace on an 8 speed cassette)

Re:

Match the shifter to the number of sprockets you have. If you're running 7, then a 7s shifter will work perfectly well with an 8s mech.
The difference comes between 8 and 9, as the cassette uses the same freehub body, so the 9 are closer together.
Hope that helps

Mike
