Can some kind soul identify this for me? I bought it as C-Record but the designs were similar up until the late 90s. I think the hex bolt rather than Allen key dates it earlier?

1st Gen Chorus 1987/8... I think.

The reflection on the front plate makes it hard to tell. Is it completely flat or does it step in for the front half inch?

If it steps in, I'm pretty sure its 1st Gen Chorus. If its completely flat its earlier than Chorus

Edited as my dates are out by year

The hinge is wrong for Chorus - the way the mech body is fixed to the braze on bit is a more complex hinge than on any chorus model.

The front plate is flat. TBH, looking at velobase it looks to be C-rec

I wish they'd just stamp a part number on it

Places like this would be so much quieter if they did though.

The hex bolt dates it as pre-1990. The split in the upper hinge is very C-Record.

Beyond that, I give up.

So... I'm voting for late 80's C-Record

That what I think... it had some dings on the body which I've managed to polish out. I've been looking for a NOS one but most eBay sellers call any old shite C-Record. From what I can see, the later Record mech (91-94) is almost identical apart from the cable clamp bolt
