are there any cheepish cranks around - either modern or retro that have either steel inserts where the pedals thread in or the whole crank is steel (but still light) these can be square taper or isis. the only ones i can find are truativ ones

i shred the treads all the time! - ill just be riding along and shred - the pedel falls off

i ride single speed so do a lot of standing up cranking hard so this may be the reason

and i ride retro so it might be the fact that the alloy is 10 years old

im not after singlespeed specific cranks tho
just light xc ones that wont do what they are all doing to me

MRC Steely Dans are steel as are syncros revolutions (although they are not exactly cheap!). There was a pair of Steely Dans for sale on the classifieds, and I've got a set but mine have a crack in the BB taper :0(

Or go the whole hog and get a set of BMX type three piece cranks like DMRs
