It was from BP Metal Composites of Farnborough. Aluminium with Silicon Carbide.

Thanks Bikemeister. Out of curiosity, is it a material still in use or did it fall by the wayside a la Kirk Magnesium?

Still in use across (many) industries, pretty much a "standard" material in some. (Usually high tech industries though).
Fairly much fallen by the wayside in cycling, too expensive for what it is, not always so easy to work with, carbon is better. (for a given value of better) So its fallen out of favour.
FWIW, MMC covers a HUGE family of materials. Much like calling a material ferrous, stainless, alloy or an aluminium barely tells you anything about what you are actually dealing with as there are hundreds (thousands!) of grades of each, many with wildly different properties.
