That's a 7 speed XT rear mech.

Replaced in 94? by the 8 speed version. But it will work perfectly with an 8 speed set up - I've got 2 bikes set up as 8 speed with either that mech or the DX version and thumbshifters, both work perfectly.
 
Is that not an XT I rear mech denoted by the fact XT is not in gold (which would make it nomially 6 speed).

XT I ran to '88
XT II (7 speed) ran '89 onwards

Ooh, good spot, sir!

It would still work fine with either a 7 speed or an 8 speed system, assuming that the pivots haven't gone floppy.
 
If it's six speed you'll prob need to change the jockey wheels.

Technically, six speed indrexed Deore XT is the second incarnation, but not Deore XT II, that was the seven speed one. The first pre-indexing Deore XT had the Deer's head on the mechanisms. Pay attention, there'll be a test later!
