I met Ned Overend when he still had a small furry animal on his upper lip. He is definitely retro!

Second post and it's an own-trumpet-blower.

First race I ever entered (1993) in Sport was won by Steve Peat. I was appalling.

When I moved to Denmark in 95, they made me race ('cos I had a road licence) in Elite with the likes of Henrik Djernis (who I deal regularly with in my current job) and Michael Rasmussen. Scary.

Always used to bump into the Peugeot trio when out riding in the Peak District when I lived in Barnsley and Manchester in early 90s.

Had Hope XC hubs (non disc) and Middleburn Chainset on order for months before they ever came out.

Used to ride round the Peak district with no suspension and 1.5 tyres pumped to 70 psi. Worked fine until I snapped the headtube off the toptube. Why do I suddenly need 13cm of travel on my new bike?

Ah, yep. I know right where that's at...just down the way from me.

Very drunk at a New Years Eve party in London in about '91(??) with Jo Burt - coming up to midnight we went onto Battersea Bridge and there was a guy on a brand new Cannondale FS bike (can't remember the model but had rigid forks and a flex stem and lurid green swingarm/triangle arrangement).

Remember Jo saying he was going to get MBUK to pay for the party by riding the bike and reviewing it...

Then spent 20 minutes trying to convince the owner - who had never heard of MBUK or Jo - that it would be alright to let this hyper, drunken maniac who claimed to draw cartoon sheep for a living ride his bike around Battersea park...

Shared a hotel room - that was supposed to be for 2 people - with Zak, Jo, Jez, Graham Hotpie, Daryll Hannah (rider for Pace and Venhill), Hemming, Rob Grant and about another dozen people at one of the shows at Ally Pally around '90 and then - rather like the farewell song in the Sound of Music - us one at a time leaving the room so the hotel didn't twig; right up until Zak went to pay the bill and paid for the porno channel with a bucket full of loose change from the whip round we had!

Text below I posted elsewhere, but it seems to belong here...

I won a magazine comp (MBUK or Mountain Biker), so myself and a mate got to stay with the Ritchey/Schwinn (+ Caroline Alexander) team for the '93 Plymouth WC race, hanging at the hotel, eating with them, helping prep bikes and even riding their bikes. On the training day, we rode the course with Tim Gould, Mike Kloser, World Champ Henrik Djernis and Henrik Frischnekt. We both virtually popped our lungs trying to keep up!

On the first big steep downhill we were passed by Tomac - going sideways!

On raceday we hung out in the team tent, and then went out on course with the team manager Mike Burney and Caroline, and handed out water bottles and swapped muddy sun glasses for Tim Gould and Co.

At the end of the weekend we each got given Team Ritchey/Schwinn jerseys and shorts (still have the Ritchey jersey), and I also have Mike Klosers signed race number somewhere.

That weekend was so cool. I remember that Tim and his girlfriend (a vegetarian) were appalled that we had eaten every meal at McDonalds on the drive down from RAF Wittering :-)

Must dig out all the old photos, programme etc

Whilst riding the Hermosa trail in Durango I met two guys on horseback coming up the trail. I paused, dismounted and chatted, they were heading up to a cabin to stock it up for winter... as we chatted it became clear one of the guys was Ed Zink, not only owner of 'probably' the best bike shop in town but also the guy who lead the promotion of the first ever international world mountain bike championships. I vaguely remember his shop had a ton of cycling jerseys signed by Overend et al.

Holy thread resurrection! We had Clint Eastwood as a guest in our hotel when I was a kid.

I am sure he has ridden a mountain bike at some point.
