I have myself a Specialized Stumpy M2 pro 1999 which i am fitting a set of Marzocchi Z2 bams (not correct i know but i cant find and red SIDs anywhere).

My question is: will the cartridge bearing of the aheadset need a crown race on the crown of the forks and if so which one/type?

I have never used a cartridge bearing only caged and races on my forks before and i`m using what came fitted to the frame.

TIA....

yes, aheadsets come with their own crown race/base plate, whichever one you use will need one so the bottom head race can sit on it. This one is a Chris King but most are more or less similar.

Excellent, thanks!

So i guess now i just need to identify my aheadset and buy the crown baseplate.

The only markings on the aheadset are:

manufactured under licence by TANGE JAPAN

Bikepedia says that it should be a Specialized Headfirst Comp

Yep....quite a lot you can buy crown races for individually, Hope, Chris King, FSA, RaceFace...etc. etc.
