Techy question: Cannondale M800 open class racing conversion

After bumping into someone at my local gym who races 24"-ers against pretty much anything, (including full sussers in the open class) - I thought I'd have a go. So the plan is to convert my (way too small) - Cannondale M800 (Beast Of The East) - into a sprinter and have a go at the open class.

It's already a single speed so currently my thoughts were to get the thing light, so I'm looking at fitting a rigid front fork, PBone or Fatty.
Perhaps replacing the threaded fork with a Ahead style threadless style fork and equivalent stem.
Does anyone know any possible *issues* I could be coming up against?

Will I need to replace the headset to achieve this?

Also, does anyone know a good SPD shoe that's similar to a Vans style trainer? Apparently a few people use SPD's but convert rigid Vans and the like but can't locate much information.

Thanks in advance for any advice. :)
