rear mech for thumbies

My Deore 1989 XT is in need of replacing.
Are there any decent shimano rear deraileurs (or other make) that work with thumb shifters???

You could use a 9 speed rear mech with a 7 speed block no problem. You can usually use a mech with less gears but the reverse doesn't always work too well.

Any mech from about 87 onwards will work perfectly with thumbies

The most extreme gap between shifter and mech was a 1988 Deore MT60 mech with current 9spd Deore shifters - worked a treat.

Period correct for 7 speed XT thumbies is only the M732 XT. Its the only way. And it has to be short-cage
