BOLT CONFUSION

SLIM

BoTM Winner
when i stripped the RTS , the main frame pivot has a non metric bolt , if i remember correctly the nearest i had was an 8 mm allen key that just fitted

anyway i want to get a new set of bolts for when i put in the new bearings

but , looking on e bay there are , UNC and UNF ??

any idea what the difference is ??

UNC is unified coarse
UNF is unified fine

Holding the two together its apparent which is coarse and which is fine, but alas you don't have that luxury. If you can accurately measure the outer diameter of the bolt I will try and get you a TPI(threads per inch) tomorrow.

Just to add confusion if the frame was assembled in the states it could be ANC or ANF American national coarse/fine.

For future reference you can get what is called a zeus book which details all these sizes, threads etc quite handy.

I have one in my tool box at work... Will scan the relevant pages and put them somewhere on the site.

Don't count on me remembering anytime soon. :)

unc and unf are near as dammit bsw and bsf unified are yank and bs is uk
you may want to heli-coil it back to metric
some people just fit anything that's near. m8 x 1.25 (standard metric)
is quite close to bsf so with a bit of ignorance it will fit
if its an 8mm allenkey that's 5/16" so it may have been tapped out 3/8"
(9.5 mm) sounds a bit scary
with recolection it's all m8 or smaller on the rts
goldtech do stuff for these so you might get info there
but a trip to your local cromwell or other eng supply folks sounds in order
for a heli-coil kit.
hope this helps
mike.

tried a new 8mm but the collar ( unthreaeded part ) fouls on the frame

could ream the frame but not going there !!

actually got them from a local engineering firm

stagonset do the imperial size but not long enough , may mail them and see

RTS main pivot bolt , top left , cant see it in the finished frame as i got some caps covering it

looks as though it should be m8
and from the pics i have can't see if its nutted but i imagine it will be
(as opposed to the other side being tapped)
now don't quote me on this but if you ream this 8 mm the bolt should
pass through fine, an 8mm drill used with care may do the same

disclaimer
i credit you with enough sense to do this properly if you
balls it up then its your own bloody fault.

mike

thats the thing dont want to feck the frame up , so no drilling

i take it an m8 is not an 8mm thread / bolt as i tried one of those and it wont fit

thought about a smaller dia bolt as in 7mm but dont know if that would work (as in too much play in the frame ) ???????

will search for an imperial that will fit rather than butcher the frame
