I want to build a bike but want to use period correct shifters.
Untill when did they use thumbshifters?
The bike is from '91/'92 ; what shifters do i need to use?

I have a 1990 (probably) Saracen Kili Flier Comp. It had a XT M735 seven speed groupset. From new it had STI (push/push) units integrated with the brake levers. These lasted about six months and were replaced under warranty. These weren't any longer lived so I hack-sawed the STI units off and got some XT Thumbshifters. These are still going strong to this day.

Personally I think it would be correct to have thumbshifters on a bike until about 1993/1994 I guess. My Specialized FS had thumbies until I upgraded to STI and that bike was from 1992.

Personally I don't notice any difference in usage between DX and XT thumbies, but I like the look of XT thumbies a bit more. But if a bike has DX components the shifters should also be DX IMHO and same goes for XT or XC Pro or XC Expert etc etc.

Definitely had DX Thumbies on more than one bike from 1992

to be honest, i never used Thumbies myself, which once are the best? XT?

XT are definitely the best. I have a pair that have been smashed up when the bike crashed and they still shift like they were new. You will not regret getting the XT thumbies.
