why is it called a bottom bracket? its not at the bottom and its not a bracket! :?

but surely a brackets function is to stop something moving not to aid it?
its a bracket supporting te cranks, in an unmoving fasion, 90 degrees relative to the seat tuve axis. And its fixed, bracketed to the BB spindle. JUst because the spindle then rotates on bearings, doesn't mean the crank arms aren't bracketed. Just on a special moving bracket. All a question of degrees of fredom, 6 in all, all are fixed but one (y-axis rotation from a side elevation).. .
