Orange Clockwork resto

Hi,
I have recently acquired an Orange Clockwork from eBay for £55, which is in need of restoration. It's going to need a re-spray, new decals, grips, cables, tyres, bearings, and probably a few other items which I'll discover as I strip it down.

The serial number is A2070357, which I understand makes it July 1992?

Does anyone know the paint code for the orange paint, so I can order some from my local car body paint supplier. And where can I obtain some replacement decals?
Also, are original handle bar grips still available, or is there something the same/similar available. I would like to keep the restoration as original as possible.

I'll be asking more questions and advice later on as the restoration proceeds, but for now here's some pictures of how it looks before I get busy.































Are the hubs and rims original? The hubs don't seem to match, but I don't have any previous experience with Orange, so not sure. If any of you spot anything in the photos, please let me know.

See Gil_M on here for decals as he has the exact ones you are after on file. Wheels and hubs are wrong, as are most of the parts by the look of it. Rims should be Mavic 231 or 231CD with hubs the same as the rest of the groupset. My bet would be that it came with 1993 Shimano LX so that's a good place to start. The grips are wrong so don't worry about those. I might have a spare pair of originals but if not I can take a pic of what you need. Stem should be a Orange Stalk but the handlebars and saddle are correct.

Some of the info you want is in my thread below .I used aerosol for the paint job but the nearest colour from an auto paint supply company was matched to Dyno Rod orange I stripped out the forks and the original colour was on the steerer and not faded.

Overally the paint condition doesn't look too bad. Have you tried T-Cutting the paint to see if it brings the colour back?

One word of warning on paint. Car paint chips badly on bike frames, and car sprayers struggle with bikes - the guns are too big and they are not used to painting thin 3D things instead of big flat areas.

If you are DIY then fine, if paying, consider a specialist painter such as Bob Jackson as the result will generally be far better.

Hi- That's a good project you've got there.. I have a '93 Clockwork, love it.. Anyway, Orange paint reference (Euro standard) is RAL 2005. That's fluoro, so you'll need a lacquer coat too. If you're wanting a budget touch-up can, Halfords have a fluoro orange that's a very close match at £5.99. Looking at your pics, with the rust and the faded paint, I'd go for a proper respray at a bike specialist, not cheap .. Depends how you feel about the bike, of course.. It'll still be a Clockwork even if you repaint it with Hammerite

Just a tip you have to paint the frame White where the flouresent orange is going or it will not be the right colour it is a 3 stage process white / orange / lacquer

Thanks for info on the wheels and stem. I'll make a note of that and get hunting for some. I'd like to take you up on your offer of the handlebar grips please. Let me know if you do have any.

You read my mind. I've borrowed some T-Cut from work, and will have a little rub here and there to see if the orange paint has just solarised and can be brought back to life with out removing too much of it. But looking at it in the flesh I don't think so, but no harm in trying. If I do end up re-spraying it, I'll be doing it myself. I'm an artist and have worked on many motorbikes and leather jackets in the past, so am a dab hand at spraying. Although I wouldn't say I'm a pro at it!

Massive thanks for the RAL number, just what I need. But what about the white? Difficult to believe, but there are hundreds of different tones of whites ranging from bluey cold to a yellowey warm white. But whatever it is, it ain't going to be Hammerite!

Sorry Fred, don't have a RAL number for the white.. I used to work for Gibson guitars in the repair and refinishing dept., enjoy spraying bikes, only use rattle cans though! Enjoy your Clockie rebuild, they're great bikes..

Will do mate. Contact Bob Jackson for the white RAL as the one they used for the 2007 Clockwork was bang on.

I've found this post, which mentions a different RAL number (RAL2004) for the orange, and RAL9010 for the white: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=39516&start=10
