Wicked fat chance BB Blues: the plot thickens

unofficial

Dirt Disciple
I was really stoked to finally build up a wicked frame I had bought a while ago but failed on the very first step: installing the bb. The frame is supposed to be from 93 but strangely it is threaded and not press fit , I thought perhaps it was just customized that way.

When i went to put in the bb (shimano cartridge) it slid all the way in without catching the threads, too large diameter?! :?:  wonder if somebody reamed/ threaded it, but if so what was the plan for installing a bb? It seems like the diameter inside the bb tube steps down after about 2cm which also seems weird...

Anybody that has any idea of what's going on and any possible remedy?

Re:

+1 for Scants tip. We used this solution many times on cross threaded or damaged customer BBs. Post some close up pics too so we can take a closer look.

Re: Wicked Fat Chance BB Blues

I will get some pics up on thursday, I had trouble capturing anything in the cellar light.

I did get an answer from the previous owner:

"It's original BB so you're having a wrong set. Make sure to use correct width (75mm?) so the threads are taking up the loads. Is that a BB from me, can't remember. It's definitely original threads, fat changed in 1989."

So it seems like it came from the factory like this (and it is a 1990 not 93 as I previously stated) so its making me wonder if I am being dumb (always possible!). I was trying a 63bb, is it possible that its like hey says/ meant that this is happening because it needs a 73? I did actually get the cup not attached to the cartridge to catch the threads so it was just the cartridge side that just slipped in, maybe the threaded region on it is too short to catch the threads before it hits the flange on a 68?

It´s either press fit or 68mm threaded. Although Fat City Cycles customized frames left and right. 93 is the year of wicked lite which is threaded already but you say 90 so it is supposed to be press fit. Try asking at fatcogs since Scott Bergson who was a welder at FCC sometimes posts there.

Re:

Need well lit close up pics really and measure the width of the BB shell to be sure its not been reamed down too. A 1990 FAT should be press fit BB 68mm shell as standard. If someone has threaded it, it still might be possible to fit original press fit bearings ( with circlip ). It may need ‘light’ thread grind with a dremmel but most likely not. The bearigs are still available and axles & lock rings too. The system works fine btw.

Here is the BB I tried to install

As you can see it slides in all the way up to the flange of the BB without catching the threads, I can even wiggle it around a little so it seems like the diameter of the shell is too big? Very strange...

It's very hard to capture but you may see there is a lip in there where the diameter decreases, it is still threaded beyond the lip, also very strange?

Re: Wicked Fat Chance BB Blues: Pics Added

Mavic or other threadless BB will work. Loads on ebay- YST for £20ish, Velo Orange £60 ish.

Re: Wicked Fat Chance BB Blues: Pics Added

It was repainted. That´s when it was probably modified. As CTK says, a Mavic BB solves your troubles. Get the best quality BB possible so you never have to look at that place again.
