Having dug out some of my old records on the weekend got me thinking about the comparison between new bikes vs. retro and cd vs. vinyl. I reckon it's a pretty good analogy

-Vinyl tends to have that certain something you never quite get with a compact disc, especially good vinyl (i.e. a good bike) with a good hifi (i.e. rider!)

-Playing something on vinyl is somehow always more of an 'occasion' than playing a CD

-Vinyl is collectable

-Some people collect it but never play it

-A knackered old record will always be worse than an equivalent CD

-As soon as CDs became available a lot of people chucked their vinyl

Of course the analogy breaks down in a few places, after all vinyl to cd was a definite distinction whereas new vs retro is somewhat arbitrary. Still it's an interesting thought. Discuss.

totally agree john (it that a first?) theres a lot of good comparisons there :)

for me modern day bikes just arent beautiful, oh sure theres a few brands doing nice stuff, but no-where the same amount as the early 90s (nostalgic? moi? ;) where a new component/ frame seemed to come out every week where you'd be like "ohhh, I must have it..."

looking through the start of the interbike pics today & theres exceptionally few frames I'd like to own.

Yo scant, where they at mate?

Vinyl.. I have a collection here in Aus [mostly old school House, a bit of Aerosmith & some randoms..], but most of my old stuff [FNM, AIC and a heap of old House 12" etc.] are still in the UK..

My bro DJs here so am surrounded by "records" when I pop round his place..

He bought me the Back To The Future Soundtrack on vinyl for my 30th 8)

 back to the future. nice!

I have a stack of old late 90s house vinyl. Used to do a bit of dj ing, so can relate quite nicely to the old school.

Records played music (well, not literally) and everyone was happy listening to music. Then it got fragmented when CD came along, and people use the little discs for computers, DVD (look the same!), SACD, DVDA etc for more specialist markets. And you now have 2-channel music is best, unless you have 11 speakers it can't be right, and unless you have a picture to go with the music you get the experiance types.

Bit tenious, but I'm trying!! :D
