Chainset thread tap - Have you got one I can borrow?

Hi All

I have a few chainsets lying about the place with slightly offset threads due to damage etc. I'm afraid to fit them as I may not be able to remove them without first having cleared out the existing thread with a tap.

Do any of you have a tap to fit the chainset extraction thread that I could borrow, alternatively do any of you know where I can buy one as I could do with one in the shed in the long term.

Thanks in advance.

Bicycle Research in the USA used to make one, but not anymore...becoming increasingly obsolete with all these new fangled through-axle jobs.

If the cranks are post-80s, then will have 22.0 x 1.0mm threads. You'll need an M22 x 1 (Metric Fine) plug/bottoming tap.
Prior to that, those Frenchies were different: 23.0mm x 1.0mm (TA) and 23.35mm x 1.0mm (Stronglight).

Ebay one from China in 6 weeks for £20-£30, or £12 + 1st class post from Tracy Tools in Devon: :D https://www.tracytools.com/taps-and-die ... x-1-metric
The difficult bit is making sure that everything is lined up straight before you start tapping. A tap handle to fit will help, too.

If that doesn't work, the crank needs to tapped out to a larger diameter and fit a special auto-extractor.
I have the VAR tool in the workshop (https://www.vartools.com/en/repair-kit- ... r-p402.php) or Stein also make one (https://www.steintool.com/portfolio-ite ... or-system/).

All the best
