8/9 speed hub with 7-speed derallieur - Possible?

Hi

Is it possible to use a 8/9 speed hub/freewheel with 7-speed XT M735 derallieur? If so, what is the best option - 7-speed cassette with spacer or 8-speed casette without using the one cog? I have M095 STI shifters.

Shimano 7, 8 and 9 speed MTB derailliers are all interchangeable. Provided the number of speeds/positions on the shifter matches the number of sprockets on the cassette, the rear derailleur will work.

If you already have a 7 speed shifter and cassette, you can fit that on an 8/9 speed freehub with a spacer.

You can't use a 7 speed shifter with an 8 or 9 speed cassette and just get 7 of the gears, the spacing between the sprockets is different, so it won't index.
